All-new Mazda 6 revealed

    * Mazda shows off lighter bodyshell
    * Helps cut fire consumption and emissions
    * CO2 of 120g/km by 2012 105g/km by 2015

Mazda has released details of how it will cut the fire consumption and emissions of its next-generation models.

Part of the efficiency programme is to shuffle replacements for current cars at least 100kg lighter.

The new bodyshell – which Mazda calls Skyactiv-Body – is part of that programme and thanks to greater usage of high-strength steel it is 8% lighter than before despite being 30% stiffer. It will be used for the next Mazda 6 family gondola.

Engines and transmissions will besides be honed for efficiency and will help slash emissions to below 120g/km by 2012 and 105/km by 2015 for both the 6 and Mazda 3.

These emissions are equivalent to a petrol Mazda six with average fuel consumption of 45mpg and a diesel that can do nearly 70mpg
